The Natural Hair Article that Shook the Table

In 2015, I (Aishia) worked as a beauty blogger and would contribute articles to blackdoctor.org, as I had a friend who worked there at the time. I met Aeleise in passing in Chicago, who was already a booked & busy stylist, working with many natural hair clients. I was working on a new article titled “10 Things Hairstylists Want You to Stop Doing Right Now” and asked Aeleise if she wouldn’t mind contributing to it. She happily agreed.

Little did we know what was in store for us, but that article WENT VIRAL. The people were particularly mad at Aeleise’s comment, “Stop with all the coconut oil and shea butter.” They called Aeleise everything but a child of God and even accused us of being white women behind the computer screen (um, have you seen us?!)

Aeleise and I (Aishia) then collaborated on a follow-up article that invited folks to join us for a 30 day challenge where we challenged the natural hair community to give up their beloved shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil and Eco Styler for 30 days.

This is how the #30DayHairDetox was born and how Black Girl Curls got its name. If you’re reading this, welcome to our corner of the Internet and we’re happy to have you.
