Which Twist Out Style Is Right for You?

When it comes to achieving a defined twist out, the style you use to set your hair makes a big difference. There are two go-to options for most naturals: two-strand twists and flat twists. (Yes, there’s also the three-strand twist, but we’re not going there today—she’s not beginner friendly and we like to keep it simple.)

So which one is best? It depends on the results you’re looking for, your comfort level with styling, and how much definition you want at the root.

Here’s a breakdown to help you figure out which twist out style is right for you:

Two-Strand Twist Outs

Best for: Volume, ease, and a soft, fluffy finish

Choose this if:

  • You’re doing your own hair and want something quick and simple

  • You’re okay with a little root puff for the sake of big hair

  • You like fuller, looser definition with a lot of movement

Flat Twist Outs

Best for: Root-to-end definition and less frizz

Choose this if:

  • You want more control and sculpted definition

  • You’re styling for an occasion or want a style that lasts longer

  • You have the time (or help) to section and set your hair carefully

Want the best of both worlds?
