3 Ways to Accept Your Natural Hair in 2023 & Beyond

We understand that self acceptance and confidence is an evolution for many and will not magically happen overnight. If you’ve never worn your natural curls in the past, it can be difficult starting to show up in a look that is very unfamiliar to you in the beginning.

The top struggles we see naturals experiencing with their natural hair all lead back to mindset. Mindset is defined as the established set of attitudes held by someone.

What we think about our hair and the voices that we allow to live rent free in our heads impact us so much more than a product or styling technique. This blog post will explore 3 things you can try to begin to take those steps to fully accept your natural hair in 2023 and beyond.

#1: Don’t Compare Your Hair to Others

We know that it’s a cliché to say that “comparison is the thief of joy” but we fully believe this to be true. We see it often, clients come into the salon thinking there’s something wrong with their styling routine because their results look nothing like their Internet hair crush.

Or the client that frustratedly shows us the picture of a loose spirally wig and expects us to be able to recreate the look on their beautiful springy, tight kinks.

Whatever is growing out of our heads, is what is growing out of our heads. There is no magic product, serum, shake, or vitamin that is going to increase the number of follicles per square inch or make your hair grow a whole inch a month. It is up to us to truly see ourselves for the beauties we are, and accept 100% of us. Your best curl life is waiting for you there.

P.S. You’re not going to be able to style your hair at home like your hair stylist. These are professionals that style up to hundreds of different heads per month and have years of professional experience. I (Aishia) can’t even style my hair the same as my stylist as a licensed stylist myself. Be comfortable being a beginner, giving yourself grace and be better than your last set. You got this!

#2: Give Yourself Patience and Grace

By a raise of hands, how many of you were regular salon goers when you were relaxed, who faithfully got your hair done every 2 weeks? If you raised your hand or silently muttered “yes” to yourself, that is okay. You’re not going to become a master of your natural hair overnight.

In our consumer education platform, The SeeSomeCurls Visual Library, we often see subscribers growing frustrated because their style isn’t lasting past a few days. It takes a ton of practice, patience and grace to become a master of anything. Think back to your occupation—you weren’t born with that skill set. It’s something you had to learn, practice and grow with over time to become good at it. Same with hair styling.

We all have style fails and that’s when we encourage you to throw that hair into a bun, seek accessories like headwraps, head bands, or bobby pins to pin it up, put it into a puff, throw in two flat twists—the possibilities are endless. You can absolutely improvise and go about your day. Don’t let your hair ruin your day, or take a shot at your confidence because it’s not doing something you want it to do.

#3: Don’t Allow Naysayers to Get Inside Your Head

Tune out the noise and wear your hair how YOU like to wear it. The keyword being you. Don’t allow outside voices such as family members or friends to tell you how they think you should wear your hair.

For one, it’s extremely rude and two, it’s none of their business! Keep showing up in the world how you’d like to show up and forget the rest. Don’t forget to complete your look with a cute lippie, some earrings, bold print or patterns and lead by example.

You know if you’re getting your fair share of positive compliments out in these streets or being chased down in your local department/grocery store that you’ve made it! We know that’s right!
