3 Pro Stylist Tips for a Super Defined Twist Out

Twist outs are a fun, romantic styling option that has become a go to for many tight curlies + naturals. When well executed, a twist out can last anywhere from 5-7 days (while longevity heavily depends on your lifestyle, the weather and your skill level).

Twists typically consist of two strands of hair being wrapped around each other that can be done free or to the scalp, underhand or overhand. Twists create an undulating curl form when taken down that can mimic a rod set.

While we think that twists outs are a fairly simple style to master and execute, Black Girl Curls has 3 crucial tips that will help seal the deal on your next super defined twist out.

Tip #1: Opt for a styling foam with hold for setting your twists

Ask any professional stylists out there, styling foams are an absolute must for a super defined twist out. For many hair stylists, time is money! Styling foams add shine and dries incredibly well and fast under a hood dryer. They’re also incredibly pliable and retain style memory and formation through take down, sleeping, and restyling into ponytails, buns, and puffs without the heavy feeling of product.

Tip #2: Allow your hair to thoroughly dry

Please for all the glory of a super defined twist out, let your hair dry 100% before you take it down! Unraveling twists that are not completely dry is the complete opposite of what you had in mind for your finished results. And for the love of longevity we strongly encourage you all to spend at least 30 minutes sitting under a hood hair dryer to achieve the absolute best results.

Tip #3: It’s all about the technique

Good technique is king when it comes to achieving a super defined twist out. Mastering your twist out will require you to practice and in some cases it will take a few rounds of sets to really nail it!
